Old Vic Annexe, now Royal National Theatre Studio, The Cut, Waterloo SE1. Designed by Lyons Israel Ellis. Built 1957–58. Listed grade II.

Originally the Old Vic Theatre Annexe, now occupied by the National Theatre, the building was designed to house the theatre’s scenery workshops, wardrobe stores and offices. With its projecting lift tower, boiler chimney, mono-pitched roof and exaggerated forms, the Annexe is an early and highly original example of the New Brutalism, with its inner functions dictating the expression of its outer appearance. The geometries of the elevation facing The Cut have a particularly rigorous compositional beauty.
