The university takes its name from the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and was originally conceived as a College of Advanced Technology but status was advanced by the government to that of a University in 1963.

Built as part of the first phase of the new campus for Brunel University the lecture theatre block (1965-66), an astonishing sculptural building, sits at the centre of the campus. The project architect was John Heywood with Clarke Nicholls and Marcel as structural engineers.
