Designed by John S Bonnington of Sir Basil Spence, Bonnington and Collins to fit on a sloping site, Sunderland Civic Centre is approached via a carefully arranged series of steps and ramps creating its own urban landscape. On plan, the building is comprised of two low-rise hexagonal blocks with inner courtyards, an administrative block to the south, and a connected car park to the north. All structures are faced externally in brindled brick and red tile giving cohesiveness to the whole. Internally, bespoke fitting and fixtures were designed by Bonnington, some adopting the hexagon as a motif.
