St Peter’s Estate
Tower Hamlets Architect's Department
Bethnal Green, London
1965-67

Bethnal Green Metropolitan Borough Council planned 6-storeyed blocks to provide 176 dwellings. This was implemented by the newly founded Tower Hamlets Council Architect’s Department under John D. Hume, Borough Architect and Planning Officer. Mary Janes and Sheppard houses, with 16 and 46 flats, opened in Warner Place in 1966 and Wyndham Deedes House, with 38 flats in Hackney Road, and Blythenhale and George Vale houses, with 54 and 22 flats in Mansford Street, in 1967. The estate was called St. Peter’s after the church which alone had survived clearance.
